Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (1939 – 87) escaped from Tibet in 1959 and was appointed by the Dalai Lama to serve as spiritual advisor to the Young Lamas Home School for the Tibetan government-in-exile. A fellowship at Oxford University eventually led Trungpa Rinpoche to bring the teachings of Buddhism to the West. Later he turned his attention to activities and teachings that extended beyond the Buddhist canon. He encouraged his students to join their experience of meditation with such disciplines as Japanese archery, calligraphy, flower arranging, tea ceremony, health care, dance, poetry, photography, theater, education, business and psychotherapy. In addition to presenting the classical Buddhist teachings from the viewpoint of the Kagyu and Nyingma schools of Tibet, he developed a program called Shambhala Training – based on the legendary enlightened kingdom of that name – to cultivate the innate human wisdom and basic goodness that does not belong to any one religion or doctrine and to begin to penetrate our modern lives with the genuine practice of meditation. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche is the author of the spiritual classics Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism and Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior, which have been translated into nine languages and sold more than 250,000 copies.
